Det har blivit mycket jobb och väldigt lite annat nu det senaste – det finns så mycket jag vill ha förberett för att kunna slappna av när Malin är här. Ibland känns det som att jag går på tomgång, som att gör saker sämre snarare än bättre, eller allra värst att jag inte gör något alls. Då är det skönt att läsa en biografiskt artikel om en annan historikers liv, istället för att läsa de böcker han skrev. Lyssna bara på det här, från ca. 1925:
"Job van Leur was nevertheless unable to see things in perspective. Baulking at the magnitude of his life goal, he regularly gave way to deep depression and its accompanying apathy. Nothing went right for him at such times, and he became convinced that he was completely unsuited to following the path of scholarship. In a long series of letters to Bouman and other friends, he complained in great detail about his supposed stupidity and shortcomings. There would be no difficulty at all in filling a page with such declarations as the following: 'And what do I actually know: a mess! What is it I am actually dealing with: a mess! What am I achieving? nothing!'"
Jag kunde inte sagt det bättre själv, Job. A mess! Vilken tröst att veta att vi allihop dras med samma nojor.
